![]() This will be followed by scans of pages that mention members of the Kresge family from the “Biographical Record” book. ![]() ![]() Rather than transcribing the section on Chestnuthill I have simply scanned the pages as they appear in the book, highlighting references to the Kresge family. We will begin by presenting the entire chapter on Chestnuthill Township as found in the Mathews book. The first book provides a brief history of Chestnuthill Township, including information on the area’s earliest settlers, their places of worship and early mercantile activity, while the second provides detailed biographies on several members of the Kresge family. The principal reason that these volumes are valuable to the modern researcher is because they often contain memories of the actual pioneer settlers themselves or their children, families that had been through the trials of settling what in many instances had been unbroken and hostile wilderness.įor the Kresge family the two most important historical reference volumes are arguably, "History of Wayne, Pike and Monroe Counties, PA" by Alfred Mathews, 1886, and "Commemorative Biographical Record of Northeastern Pennsylvania including the counties of Susquehanna, Wayne, Pike and Monroe," J.H. Pennsylvania is fortunate because virtually every county was the subject of one of more of these historical reference books, including Monroe County. The last quarter of the 19th century saw the publication of a series of historical and biographical books generally focusing on communities and/or individuals within a county or several adjacent counties. ![]()
